Child Care Services

The Kids Can Child Development Center at SRRC provides quality educational play-based child care services to children with and without special needs that are developmentally appropriate to meet each child’s needs. 

With eight classrooms, we are able to provide care to children ages six weeks to pre-k and beyond in some cases.   Our DCFS licensed facility is open Monday – Friday, from 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Pre-School Services

SRRC also provides quality full day pre-school for kids ages 4 and 5.  Pre-school provides social interaction as well as kindergarten readiness to help with the coming transition.

Classes offer number awareness, letter and shape practice and both fine and gross motor skill development.  Play time increases social development and students are offered free play in a number of centers including science, math and pretend play.

Pre-school runs year round with with a graduation to mark the end of the program for those moving on to kindergarten.

​The Autism Resource Center

​Through the support of The Coleman Foundation, The Autism Program, Illinois Department of Human Services, Hope Institute, and private donations; SRRC has been able to establish The Autism Resource Center. Since 2011, the Center has operated solely through local donations. The Autism Resource Center contains a wide variety of resources including visual supports, books, computer software used to create visual schedules, DVDs, games, structured teaching kits, learning aids, and other materials that address various issues affecting individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, their families, and the professionals with whom they work.

We currently have approximately 300 resources that can be borrowed for two weeks at a time at no charge. While we have several visual prompts already available, families and professionals can also create and individualize their own. They can be printed and laminated at no cost. ​Therapy Services

Developmental Screenings
SRRC therapists provide free developmental screenings for children six weeks to three years old. Through play and parent/guardian interviews, a credentialed therapist can determine whether a child is meeting his or her developmental milestones appropriately or whether he/she may require further testing. Parents/guardians leave the screening appointment with a report and information on activities to stimulate further development. Screenings are provided free of charge in our Center in Ottawa and at locations throughout LaSalle & Bureau County. The LaSalle County 708 Board provides funding to help with screenings for LaSalle County children.

Evaluations
SRRC staff participate as part of a team to provide evaluation services when it is believed that a child has developmental delays or is at risk of such delays. Evaluations are scheduled through local Child and Family Connection offices. SRRC recognizes that there is a growing need for services related to Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Developmental Therapy (birth to age 3)
Developmental therapists look at a child’s global (total) development. They provide play-based services to address developmental challenges. Services are provided in the child’s home, at our locations, and at other community locations chosen by the family.

During therapy, the DT will develop individualized play activities designed to help a child overcome their challenges and improve the quality their interactions. These activities help the child to gain confidence in their own ability to learn and to acquire typical day to day skills.

Our therapists will help design a plan for the family including training and routines that will help reinforce through the week what the child is doing with their therapist.  Through this partnership, a child will be able to flourish and reach their maximum potential.

Speech Therapy (birth to 18 years)
Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) assess speech, language, cognitive-communication, and oral/feeding/swallowing skills in a child.  They can identify types of communication problems (articulation; fluency; voice; receptive and expressive language disorders, etc.) as well.  Once an assessment is done, the SLP is able to determine the best course of action, personalized to that child's need.  

Most services are provided at our Ottawa location however we do have some limited availability to provide services in homes.

Occupational Therapy (birth to 18 years)
Occupational therapy is an integral part of early intervention. Occupational therapists help children achieve their developmental milestones such as fine motor and hand-eye coordination. They also help children with sensory processing difficulties.  

OT can help kids with various needs improve their cognitive, physical, sensory, and motor skills and enhance their self-esteem and sense of accomplishment.  People often think "occupational" and assume that OT is only for adults, after all, kids don't have occupations.  However, a child's job is to play and learn through playing.  Occupational therapists evaluate a child's skills while playing and doing daily activities and compare them with what is appropriate for their age group's development.  A plan is then put in place for how to improve the skills that are lagging behind.

Toddler Class (2 year olds)
A structured developmental playgroup for two year olds that meets two mornings a week. Classes are limited in size and encourage language development, social skills, and sensory activities. Financial assistance is available in many circumstances. Classes are held in at the Ottawa center.
